A “green” and state-of-the-art distribution center 

The distribution center and headquarters of Χalkiadakis S.A. are located on privately owned premises covering 14 acres within a total area of 40 acres, the largest distribution center in Southern Greece and one of the most modern in the Balkans.

Our facilities in the heart of Crete enable us to meet the supply needs of our stores more directly, efficiently, and safely. We ensure the highest standards of product hygiene and safety, as well as optimal temperature and humidity conditions, maximizing the product’s shelf life in your home.

A Warehouse Management System (WMS) is in place, which relies on Radio Frequency Systems (RF systems) for the full range of its operations. This ensures optimal conditions regarding the accuracy and security of deliveries, traceability, and full control of inventory.

The building was constructed using prestressed concrete for greater strength and a higher fire resistance rating. All exterior walls were lined internally with panels to improve thermal insulation, ensuring that the temperature conditions inside the building are suitable for all seasons of the year for both employees and the food and beverages being handled.

Light tubes have been installed to illuminate all storage areas, providing natural lighting throughout the facilities by harnessing solar energy and utilizing special mirrors that diffuse natural light into all areas where cargo is stored and handled. This results in an energy savings of 180 kW for 10 hours per day, totaling 1,800 kW (kilowatts). Additionally, special ventilators powered by photovoltaic panels have been installed to ventilate all storage areas, ensuring adequate ventilation throughout the day without consuming energy. These two interventions have created conditions for safe working environments and the storage of goods in areas that meet all ISO 22000 (HACCP) standards, while saving energy and protecting the environment.

Special care was taken in the design of the cold storage rooms to ensure they operate at minimum energy consumption, as all equipment operates with capacity control and all expansion valves in the rooms are electronic. A state-of-the-art biological treatment plant has been installed to treat wastewater from the warehouses and cold storage rooms.

Finally, there is a photovoltaic system in operation on the warehouse premises with a total installed capacity of 85 kW.

A secure distribution center that ensures the quality of the products stored within it and distributed throughout Crete, with the lowest possible environmental footprint.
